Bulletin Announcements from 3/15/2009

ALTAR FLOWERS are given to the glory of God by Gerald Freeny in thanksgiving to God for His many blessings and in celebration of the birthday of his mother, Charlie Freeny.

OUR PURPLE PARAMENTS Donated in loving memory of Marsenlane Parker, the paraments on our altar, lectern and pulpit are purple for the Season of Lent. Purple is the color for penitence and mourning. Our particular parament set is called “The Way of the Cross.” The altar parament includes the symbol of hands carrying a Cross, a reminder of what Christ did for us. Two victorious Crosses, absent a body but draped with a white cloth, can be found to either side of the center. The lectern parament shows Christ on the Cross. The nimbus, or halo, is found behind Christ’s head, a symbol of eternity. Christ’s nimbus includes three rays, appearing as a Cross, a symbol of the Trinity. The pulpit parament shows the standing Agnus Dei. Standing with a Cross, the Agnus Dei represents the Risen Christ Who triumphs over death. John the Baptist proclaimed Jesus to be the Lamb of God. Note the nimbus, again with the three rays, revealing the Divinity of the Lamb of God.

NEXT SUNDAY! Our worship service next Sunday will celebrate the baptism of Levi Addis Vila, infant son of Lisa Morita and Scott Vila. Please make sure to join with Levi’s family and friends on this important day of his life. A special luncheon will follow the service.

PLAN AHEAD NEXT SUNDAY! Due to next Sunday’s Pasadena Marathon and Bike Tour, there will be some travel interruptions in getting to Church. Orange Grove and Washington will be shut down from Raymond to Lake and the intersection at Orange Grove and Los Robles will allow intermittent vehicular passage. Plan ahead and prepare to follow detours.

MIDWEEK LENTEN SERVICES Don’t forget about our Lenten services every Wednesday at 12:00 noon and 7:00 p.m. This week’s topic is “Covenant.”

BECOMING YOUR FAVORITE CHURCH! Our Board of Evangelism is starting the first step in our “Core Values” study. All members and regular worshipers are invited to attend a brunch on Saturday 28 March at 10:00 a.m. in the Green Room. RSVP to Harriet Dickens at (626) 398-1565.

A DATE TO SAVE! Sunday 14 June will celebrate Pastor Schaar’s 15th year in the ministry and his 15th year of service here at Historic First Lutheran. The guest preacher that day will be The Reverend Stanley A. Quebe, the pastor who confirmed Pastor Schaar and also preached at his ordination in 1994. That same afternoon will be Pastor Schaar’s annual open house.

LAST CHANCE Anyone still interested in renewing or subscribing to the “Lutheran Witness” are reminded that the $15.00 fee is now due. Please use your designated envelope.

PORTALS OF PRAYERS The April - June issue of “Portals of Prayer” is available free of charge from the Information Rack in the Narthex. Get yours today!

GREAT JOB! After a rocky financial start to the year in January (a $4600.00 deficit), we’ve nicely recovered during February, not only covering all our expenses during February, but knocking down our deficit to $1917.52. Our approved 2009 Budget anticipates a $4300.00 deficit year-to-date, so we are well below that anticipated number. Thanks for your generous contributions and please keep us the good work!

THANKS! Special thanks are due to Dennis Schaar who has been slowly trimming back all our 140+ roses on campus. Special thanks also to Pastor Bill Fackler and Brian Hooper for playing the piano for our Midweek Lenten Services.

ZONE RALLY The Spring Rally of Lutheran Women’s Missionary League will be this Saturday at 8:30 a.m. at Emmaus Lutheran Church, 840 S. Almansor, Alhambra. If you are interested in attending, please speak to Carol Numrich as she will be driving.

TEDDY BEAR THANKS Over 40 teddy bears left their temporary home in the Green Room and traveled on their first leg of their journey to ride with children visiting their mothers at Chino Women’s Prison. They wanted to thank you for allowing them to go on this special trip!

USHERS TAKE NOTE Next week’s service will involve Usher Team #1 – Bernadette Hendry, Greg Hendry and Ann Price.
