Bulletin Announcements from 5/27/2007

ALTAR FLOWERS are given to the glory of God by Lisa Morita and Scott Vila in loving memory of the death of their daughter, Laureen Sue Vila, and in celebration of their 13th wedding anniversary.

CELEBRATING GOD’S LOVE The additional arrangement of roses on the altar are from some of the more than 140 roses on the campus of Historic First Lutheran. They are a reminder of God’s continuing love for us.

RED PARAMENTS The beautiful red paraments adorning our lectern, altar and pulpit were donated in loving memory of Lola Headrick.

DID YOU KNOW? There’s probably much about Historic First Lutheran that many of us do not know. Watch weekly bulletins for “I DIDN’T KNOW,” a weekly historical or interesting tidbit of information about Historic First Lutheran.

I DIDN’T KNOW! Perhaps you didn’t know that, due to its unusual, breath-taking design, the then-new church building of Historic First Lutheran was featured on the cover of “The Concordia Junior Messenger” magazine in October, 1938. This was brought to our attention by the grandparents of our former Director of Youth and Community Outreach Ministries, Tom Edelen, who discovered the old magazine in their farmhouse basement after Tom joined our staff in 1996. They sent us the magazine, which is now in our church archives. Copies of the cover are included in today’s bulletin.

LUTHERAN WOMEN’S FELLOWSHIP A reminder that our sandwich / salad luncheon and program is this Saturday 2 June at 11:30 AM in the Green Room with our guest speaker who will discuss the work being done among women who are incarcerated and their children. She speaks from experience after being falsely imprisoned for 16 years. Gift items to benefit this ministry can be left in the Green Room on the benches.

EARLY MORNING HELP NEEDED! Help (especially MEN) is needed this Saturday 2 June starting at 8:00 a.m. to set up and decorate the gym for our Anniversary luncheon the next day. Continental breakfast items will be provided as incentive.

TWO WEEKS FROM TODAY On Sunday 10 June at 1:00 p.m., Pastor Gómez will confirm 8 young people who have been instructed in the Christian faith and who will receive their First Communion. You are all invited to attend this special service (please note: the service will be conducted in Spanish).

A PRODUCTION CHANGE Due to a couple unforseen problems, the three special books anticipated to be available at our upcoming 115th Anniversary celebration will actually be printed and available for purchase later in the summer. This includes “The Life of Jesus,” the descriptions of our stained glass windows, “I Didn’t Know,” the listing of little known historic facts about Historic First Lutheran, and “The BOPSS,” the best of Pastor Schaar’s sermons.

NEXT SUNDAY Pastor Ken Klaus, speaker of “The Lutheran Hour” radio program will lead our Bible study and will host a question and answer session at 9:00 a.m.

USHERS: TAKE NOTE Next week’s service will involve Usher Team #3: Chris Baker, Asunta Barnes, Michael Dickens and Rudy Melinat.
